Due to a temperature forecast of -27 C as a high with the windchill bringing it to -35 to -40 C on Friday (Jan. 12), Apex Mountain Resort has closed its ski lifts until Saturday.

Extreme cold in the Okanagan means it won’t be business as usual at the Apex Mountain Resort on Friday, Jan. 12.

The resort made the announcement Thursday afternoon and added that night skiing will also be unavailable on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 13.

Apex restaurants, general stores and shops will remain open as usual.

Representatives from the resort said on social media that normal hours of operations will resume on Saturday. The current forecast for that day indicates temperatures could reach -25 C, without the windchill.

Meteorologists say B.C.’s Interior was hit with an “arctic blast” on Thursday, Jan. 11, resulting in daytime temperatures of between -10 and -17 C.

Overnight temperatures with the windchill are expected to reach -27 C across the Okanagan.

No other activities at Apex have been forced to close due to the frigid conditions, as of Thursday evening.

The resort opened for the season in mid-December, after a warmer-than-normal start to winter.
